A Second Look: Alaska Republicans Want Redo Election For Stevens

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Alaska Republican Party on Thursday called on Democratic Sen. Mark Begich to resign in light of the now-abandoned federal convictions that had crippled his GOP opponent, Ted Stevens, in last year’s election. Begich rejected the idea and even his Republican colleague said what’s done is done.

State Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich said Begich should step down to allow for a special election so Alaskans could vote without the “improper influence of the corrupt Department of Justice.”

Republican Gov. Sarah Palin immediately endorsed the idea.

“I absolutely agree,” she said in a statement released by Meghan Stapleton, spokeswoman for SarahPAC, Palin’s political action committee.

Ahem. Excuse me. I believe that the “improper influence” of the Department of Justice aforementioned here belonged to the George W. Bush administration. The Democratic Party had nothing to do with it. The DOJ was headed by Republicans at the time, Stevens own party, and at the top – Alberto Gonzales.

Calling for a special election is a pathetic attempt to politicize the current DOJ’s super-human act of policing themselves, taking their lumps, and correcting a blunder by Gonzales and his minions.

The Republican DOJ might have possibly set the stage for a mistrial. It is possible that they may have purposefully blown the trial to get their teacher’s pet, Stevens off the hook. Maybe the plan backfired because of a weak defense attorney. There is any number of reasons why the judge/jury ruled against Stevens even though the prosecution withheld evidence – one reason was that Mr. Stevens was guilty as sin.

All is for naught, anyway. Palin and her fans are just grandstanding. There is no legal basis forcing Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) to resign, or to have a special election.
